What's in the PPE toolbox talk?

A PowerPoint of about ten minutes, with speaker notes on every slide. So there's nothing for you to prepare.

  1. What is PPE?
  2. The hierarchy of control: PPE comes last
  3. When is PPE required?
  4. Types of PPE and what they do
  5. Correct use, maintenance and storage
  6. Employer and worker responsibilities
  7. Three-question quiz and an open discussion

It ends with a sign-in slide for your own QR code, so attendance is recorded straight away.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the PPE toolbox talk

Who pays for PPE in the UK?

The employer. Under the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992, employers must provide suitable PPE free of charge and maintain, clean and replace it. Since the 2022 amendment, this duty also covers most casual (limb b) workers.

When does a worker have to wear PPE?

Whenever a risk remains after other controls, such as removing the hazard or engineering measures. The employer sets this out in the risk assessment, and a blue mandatory sign shows which PPE is required in that area.

Can I adapt the toolbox talk?

Yes. The PowerPoint is fully editable, so feel free to add photos of your own site, your PPE policy or your own QR code for attendance.
