Organising toolbox talks without the hassle

Your job is to inform, instruct and train your people, not to chase everyone with a clipboard to collect signatures.

E-lia replaces the paper attendance sheet with a record that builds itself:

  • You send the toolbox talk to your workers’ phones.
  • They go through it in their own language.
  • A short knowledge check shows the message has landed.

Your dashboard keeps track of who is up to date, ready for your ISO 45001 audit or a visit from the HSE.

Frequently asked questions about toolbox talks

What is a toolbox talk?

A short, regular safety briefing with the team. The aim is to open up a conversation about today’s risk, such as working at height or in a confined space.

With E-lia, you deliver the toolbox talk interactively via WhatsApp, in each worker’s own language.

UK law sets no fixed number. Under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, you must give your people the information, instruction and training they need to work safely.

Toolbox talks are a widely used way to meet that duty. Many companies hold one every week or fortnight, and clients or principal contractors often set their own frequency.

With the library of 80+ ready-made toolbox talks, you always have material to hand.

It is short, practical and interactive, with examples and images your people recognise.

Also check that the message has been understood. E-lia ends every toolbox talk with a few quick questions, so you have it in black and white.

Anyone with enough knowledge of the work and practical experience. Often that is the site manager or supervisor, who knows the risks of the day.

Because E-lia provides ready-made material, any supervisor can give a toolbox talk without preparation.

In practice, yes. A record is how you show you have met your duty to inform, instruct and train, whether at an ISO 45001 audit or after an incident. Paper sheets get lost or are illegible.

With E-lia, participants scan a QR code at a face-to-face talk or complete the toolbox talk via WhatsApp. Everything goes straight into your dashboard.

A face-to-face toolbox talk is best kept to 10 to 15 minutes.

Via E-lia, a worker goes through the content and questions on their phone in 5 to 8 minutes. So the site keeps running.

There is no fixed legal list. The content follows the risks in your risk assessment. Common recurring topics are falls from height, confined spaces, PPE and lifting operations.

In E-lia, you will find 80+ up-to-date topics, written by a qualified health and safety professional.

Yes. As principal contractor under CDM 2015, you coordinate health and safety for everyone on site, including self-employed workers, agency staff and subcontractors.

With E-lia, they receive the same toolbox talk via WhatsApp or via a QR code at the gate. That way, the whole supply chain is on record.

On many UK sites, that is the rule rather than the exception. Instruction has to be comprehensible, and anyone who does not understand it is a risk to themselves and the team.

E-lia translates automatically: you send in English, and your Polish, Romanian or Portuguese colleagues read and answer in their own language.

The auditor wants to see three things: the content, who attended and whether it was understood.

With E-lia, you pull up a complete overview in one click, by site, location or team. And it is still there months later.
