FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the working at height toolbox talk

Can you work from a ladder?

Yes, but only for low-risk, short-duration work (HSE suggests up to 30 minutes in one position) where your risk assessment shows that more suitable equipment is not justified. This follows from the Work at Height Regulations 2005; for longer or heavier work, choose a mobile tower or a MEWP.

What is the right angle for a ladder?

75 degrees, which is the 1-in-4 rule: one unit out at the base for every four units up. A quick check is to put your toes against the foot of the ladder and hold a rung with your arms outstretched.

Is there also a toolbox talk on mobile towers?

Yes, the E-lia library has separate toolbox talks on working at height (the basics), ladders and mobile access towers. Browse all topics.
